Located in the northeast of France at the River Ill, the city of Strasbourg is the capital of the region of Alsace and the préfecture (capital) of the département Bas-Rhin. With a population of about 500 000 people, Strasbourg is one of the 9 biggest cities of France.
The famous architecture of its old town was registered by the UNESCO in December 1988 on the list of world heritage. Besides New York and Geneva, Strasbourg is the the only city in the world that hosts international institutions without being capitals of state.
The city is the seat of the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. Together with Brussels (Belgium), it hosts the new seat of the European Parliament.
